The Labor origins of the Just Transition

The Late Tony Mazzochi, Former Leader of the Oil Chemical and Atomic Workers

The late Tony Mazzochi, was a leader in the Oil, Chemical, and Atomic Workers, which eventually was merged into what is now the United Steelworkers. Mazzochi, is credited with seeding the idea of the just transition. In his seminal piece, A Superfund for Workers, he articulated this vision:

In 1989, prior to the release of his Superfund piece, he spoke to members of the AFSCME Local 444 in Oakland, CA. Maazochi, an Army vet spoke about how after WWII the federal government provided funding to returning soldiers that included 52 weeks of salary at 60% of the median workers wages giving them time to transition back home. It is in this vain that he shares the following:

β€œI’m not a proponent of work. I still maintain the program the labor movement should be forget jobs we should look out for income. I think we need a transition I think we go take care of nature environment…we’ve got to switch over to a different type of work. β€œ

In solidarity,

Trace
