Good People! Apologies for the delay in sending this out as I’ve been on the ground connecting with folks doing the work. It’s been a great reminder that while the sharing of resources is needed, the sharing of time and of presence and the breaking of bread is the foundational element for all of this. 🙏🏾

Lagniappe ⚜ (a lil extra)
News Scan: Updates to Track 📰
Hyundai has made news for the federal immigration raid in Georgia. The company is also simultaneously planning to expand into Louisiana with a $600M incentive by the State of La. Don’t gloss over that — $600,000,000! Could you imagine what that funding would do to support local small business development, schools, health care facilities? Always enough money for billion dollar multinational polluters industrial but never enough for the multigenerational descendants and residents of south Louisiana. The good folks at Rural Roots and Louisiana Bucket Brigade are calling it like they see it.

Honoring the past, Building the future
I recently had the opportunity to visit River Road African American Museum in Donaldsonville, Louisiana. The organization has a restored a school built by Booker T Washington and Julius Rosenwald and is one the few restored, operational schools in existence. The Rosenwald schools were created to support the education of Black students during the height of Jim Crow segregation. Additionally, the RRAM is in the midst of restoring the True Friends Benevolent Society Hall, a hub of mutual aid for Donaldsonville.
This work is not only historic preservation and restoration, but its also community revitalization creating more jobs and economic opportunity, while shifting how residents view themselves and their history. It ALSO presents a tremendous job creation, small business development, and cooperative development for these rural communities to restore homes and building and to implement weatherization and energy efficiency measures.
In solidarity,
Trace
