Good Jobs First is an incredible org that truly cares about the creation of lasting, good (pun-intended) jobs in communities. BUT they do this in a way where their analysis is counter to economic development as usual, which fundamentally believes tax incentives and breaks are the only way for local well-being. This recent report by them highlights that the $360B in spending (most of which are materials and equipment) expected by data centers companies, that some states are losing between “52 to 70 cents on every dollar they spend on data center tax exemption” 😨😨

It is an unfortunate reality that climate disasters are increasingly a normal part of our lives. A few weeks ago, Hurricane Melissa did tremendous amounts of damage to many places and especially to Jamaica. As someone that grew up with hurricanes as a recurring character in my life, I firmly believe in the power of solidarity and good ole fashioned “knowing your neighbors” as a resilience strategy.
As an island nation, Jamaica has to import the majority of its fuels for electricity generation making it both costly and a significant time delay during times of emergencies. However, many community members had their own solar + battery storage systems that enabled them to support their neighbors.
From the article by EnergyMix:
“But some residents whose solar panels escaped damage have been able to keep the lights on. Annabelle Todd and Jennifer Hue, who each have solar and battery systems installed on their properties, said their homes became refuges for neighbours in need of electricity access. Community members were able to charge phones, take a cool drink from the refrigerator, and message loved ones to let them know they were safe, according to the Times.”
This sort of solidarity-based infrastructure is a lesson to be learned from Jamaica. If you’re working on similar in the US I’d love to connect. 🇯🇲
