While Sinners is fictional, it points to the models of solidarity forged in Mississippi and throughout the Deep South amidst the physical and economic terror of Jim Crow.
We’ll spare y’all another thinkpiece on the film, but IMO, its an instant classic. As we’ve mentioned before, during these uncertain times, the ancestors have something to teach us. Without spoilers, the juke joint in Sinners only came to fruition in large part because of the collective support from community members within the Mississippi Delta. This points us back to deep history of economic solidarity in the South, with a shining example of that being the great Fannie Lou Hamer’s Freedom Farm Cooperative.
“The time has come now when we are going to have to get what we need ourselves. We may get a little help, here and there, but in the main we’re going to have to do it ourselves”- Fannie Lou Hamer, 1969
With some modest financial backing and a commitment to keeping the cooperative’s priority of being purpose-built for poor folks. The cost of joining the cooperative as a member was $1 in 1969, which converts to ~$9 in today’s currency. Freedom Farm Cooperative eventually grew to 640+ acres. While the farm was successful, the lack of undercapitalization from the start and ongoing funding streams led to its closure. For those with access to capital this is a lesson to be learned in this times of increased austerity. Now is the time to double down, not run.
