Rarely, do you see something that is so blatantly a grift for the fossil fuel industry. Legislation is being advanced in Louisiana that would classify gas and other hydrocarbons as being of the same equivalency as solar, wind, and other sources more commonly understood as being clean. And before any of you write this off as Louisiana being Louisiana, it is my firm belief and the evidence bears out, that so goes Louisiana and so goes the nation. And this is explicitly the tactic of these dark money groups
“In 2024, Gov. Landry [La. Gov] signed a pro-gas proclamation stating that “Louisiana recognizes natural gas as an affordable, reliable, and clean energy resource,” and that efforts to transition away from fossil fuels stand to “devastate” Louisiana consumers and economic growth.
The Louisiana proclamation was celebrated by a group called The Empowerment Alliance, a gas advocacy group. “That’s three down and 47 more states to go,” wrote the group, which is now pushing similar bills across the country.”

We’re all being inundated by the rise of AI. But we should make explicit that as AI demand surges, major tech companies and local governments are utilizing this moment to expand gas power plants to meet the needs of the resource intensive data centers.
A community in northern Virginia, which has over 500+ data centers and known as “the Data Center Capital of the World”, developed a powerful campaign to stop the expansion of a data center that would increase particulate matter pollution in their area. Great reporting on this covered by Grist.
Things don’t always have to happen just because they’re proposed,” Stump said. “I mean, everybody has a voice, and we found out that our voices did count this time.
