News Scan: Updates to Track 📰

It used to be cliche to talk about the weather, but how can we NOT talk about THIS weather!?! Approximately 150,000,000 Americans (yes that’s about half the country) are facing significant heat risks right now. Not only is this of concern for those who have to be outside (workers, commuters, animals, the unhoused, etc) but it also has implications for energy bills, especially for folks already energy burdened. Something that this article educated me on was how dangerous heat is.

”Heat is the deadliest weather hazard in the U.S., killing more people annually than hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, or extreme cold.”

As many of us are navigating the extreme heat its important to keep perspectives on how to show up for ourselves, our communities, and to spread the broader adoption of these models.

One such model - cooling centers! 😎

Municipalities across the country are opening up public spaces to function as cooling centers. Furthermore, leading environmental justice organizations like The Descendants Project are building Climate Resilience Hubs to support cooling and heating for folks. Orgs such as WE ACT for Environmental Justice have conducted audits and made recs to ensure that centers are operating and accessible to the community writ large.

Stay cool folks

In solidarity,
