As many of us are all too familiar with how the federal funding landscape has been an upheaval towards building a regenerative economy. While some philanthropic $$$ are stepping in to fill these gaps, many are still timid. IMO, even in the best of times both of these would be insufficient (or at least incomplete) as they still rely on external funding preferences rather than capital directed by local communities. There are leaders out there modeling what could be!
One of the orgs that weβve featured on Common River is the NDN Collective. I get hype watching this video describing their work.
This article from Inside Philanthropy profiles four Native-led funders that are reinvesting and recirculating capital into their communities. AND this is despite data showing that only 1% of total philanthropic $$$ go to Native-led orgs and only 20% of the major foundations have portfolios focused on aligned strategies.
βBut focusing solely on multibillion-dollar grantmakers overlooks the ecosystemβs galaxy of Native-led foundations, regrantors and tribal funders, which, according to Native Americans in Philanthropy, constitute βa growing segment to support Native American communities.ββ
The four funders mentioned are:
$12.6M to 200+ orgs in ed, health, community dev, and preservation in 2024
$2M in emergency funding to address tribal food delays in 2024
$3.5M in direct, cash support to 100+ people in 2023
$5.5M to Native-led orgs since its founding
What if we were the stewards?
In solidarity,
