Chevron ordered to pay $745 million for damaging Louisiana wetlands over decades by EHN Curators for The Daily Climate: Another instance of an oil & gas company acting up, its almost as if - 🤔. Chevron, through its acquisition of Texaco, has been ordered by a Louisiana Court to pay damages for destroying wetlands and leaving behind infrastructure after they finished operations. Let’s keep it real- if a Louisiana court is ruling against an oil & gas company, then you know you really 🤬-up! Fossil fuel companies often leave behind infrastructure that continues to pollute our air and atmosphere. For more, read about orphaned oil wells. The damages are broken down as follows: ”$575 million for land loss, $161 million for pollution, and $8.6 million for leftover infrastructure.” These types of antics by industry contribute significantly to Louisiana’s rapidly eroding coastline.
Under Trump, the St. John site is no longer considered for historic landmark designation by Safura Syed for Verite News: An 11-mile stretch of land home to a landmark freetown of Black descendants in rural St. John the Baptist Parish located in Cancer Alley had its National Historic Landmark application removed by the National Park Service. The heart of this community is Wallace, LA, one of the few communities not subjected to the unmitigated density of fossil fuel infrastructure in the rest of the region and is home to the Whitney Plantation, the only former plantation dedicated to telling the story of the enslaved from their perspective. This action was taken by the NPS upon request from the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality as it has its eyes on making this land prime for industrial development, doubling down on the moniker of Cancer Alley. Co-founders and co-directors of the Descendants Project, Dr. Joy and Jo Banner continue to fight the good fight and are underterred by the foolishness at the local, state, and federal gov. Check out and support their work.

““This is an attempt to diminish the contributions and significance of Black history, culture and well-being,” the Banner sisters said in a press release sent to Verite. “Most importantly, we are fighting for the health of our current and future residents and for the livability of our community.””

While polluters are emboldened in this moment, we know that its always been on us to protect our people, restore our land, and fight for our future.
An organization that is giving me energy right now is JustAir. Darren Riley, its founder, has created a community-rooted air quality monitoring platform to hold polluters accountable, with monitoring happening throughout metro Detroit.
